A large amount of animals can be very costly and time consuming. Consider starting with smaller animals like Chickens, ducks, or rabbits. These smaller animals are a little easier to take care of.

Avoid overspending your money.
If you sink your life savings into one piece of land then you won’t have the funds needed to grow. Think smart, pay off your debts and start saving before you make purchases.

Never buy land without checking local ordinances. You could find yourself in legal trouble if you purchase land without checking laws first. Some towns do not allow off-grid living, chickens or even gardens. Protect yourself and be sure to do your research.

Understand it will take time for your homestead to profit.
As a homesteader you know that the things you are raising, are things people may want to buy. Avoid “counting your chickens before they’re hatched”. Some newbies will take customers or deposits before they even have their first eggs. Be mindful things can happen. Cold nights can kill your chicks or insects can come and eat your crops. It’s important to account for emergencies should they spring up and not oversell yourself or your products. Even if you are not making money, the joys of starting and owning your own homestead are incredible.
